Juan Wilson Sac is a Spanish and English teacher from San Pedro La Laguna, Guatemala. He has been teaching students of all ages for 10 years in person and online. He has a passion for helping in his community and can often be found delivering care packages to those in need. When he is not working or fulfilling his duties as an active Board member, he can be found playing soccer, running, teaching Spanish, and spending time with his children.

Tracy Gates is a school principal in Vancouver, Canada. She has spent most of her life working with children of all ages. Tracy has travelled extensively around Latin America and at one point lived in both Bolivia and Italy. It was during her travels she developed an interest in the issues around poverty and literacy in the developing world. Upon returning to Canada, Tracy received her Masters degree which focused on literacy in marginalized communities. After many failed attempts at learning Spanish on her own, she decided to spend several summers in Guatemala studying...and discovered Lake Atitlan! When she isn't teaching or working as a Project Board member and general jack-of-all-trades, she loves playing volleyball, listening to obscure podcasts, walking her neurotic dog Frankie, and.....still working on her Spanish.
OUR STORY

Juan Wilson and Tracy met while Tracy was studying Spanish in Guatemala. They began discussing some of the issues that exist in Guatemala such as politics, culture, poverty and especially, education. They also spoke about what could be done to address these issues, and how to help the most marginalized members of the communities. Both Juan Wilson and Tracy are passionate about education and feel that education is the key to sustainable and long-term change in the developing world, especially for women and girls. As both of them are teachers, it seemed like a logical step to use their skills and passion to create a project that combined education and English language skills to empower women and girls... and Project Maltioxinem was born!

Our core values

We are a small but committed group of people who believe in the power of education to empower and transform lives.
We believe that all children deserve an education. We believe that women are the pillars of the family and community and by educating and empowering women, you can empower whole families and communities. We believe that education is a long term investment that requires commitment and support, but is one of the only ways to ensure lasting and meaningful change in developing countries.
