The Students
Delmy Valesquez
This summer we visited Delmy and her mother Angelina. Delmy has taken a year off of her studies in order to work and help her mother pay for the rental of their home as her mom is the only provider and makes money by washing clothes in the lake and weaving belts by hand. Delmy works full time in a hardware store and really enjoys talking with the customers and when there is an opportunity she picks up extra hours working as a carpenter’s assistant. She is quite accomplished and even built a wardrobe by herself with donated wood. You can see it in the photo! Delmy wants to continue her studies in either business administration or law so she can attend schooling nearby at Lake Atitlan. Delmy will be starting her next phase of education in January 2025 but needs your support to attend! Delmy graduated with excellent marks in grade 12 and was even nominated to be the Municipal “Queen of the Youth”, a position she held for the entire year as a youth representative to the local town council. Delmy is a dedicated young woman with a bright future, and with your help can change her life and that of her mother’s as well. |
New High School Scholars
We have graduated our last group of high school girls Karla, Delmy T. and Delmy V. That means we needed to identify three new deserving scholars. In the summer of 2024 Tracy returned to Guatemala and spent time with Juan Carlos and Wilson interviewing new candidates and doing home visits to see the families. After ten days of visits, we chose three new deserving scholars to receive high school scholarships, Rebeca Janet, Kateryn, and Ana.
They all are dedicated students, with supportive families and big dreams for their future. The money we provide pays for their monthly tuition, uniforms, textbooks, stationary supplies, and any special expenses that pop up during the course of the school year. Every month Juan Carlos and Wilson check in with the girls and the families to make sure they are attending school and check on their progress. We are excited to see what these girls will do!
